RC Strasbourg have announced the signing of Ukrainian international Eduard Sobol from Club Brugge. The defender has signed a three-and-a-half year contract with Le Racing for €2m plus €500k in add-ons.
The 27-year-old has won three league titles during his time in Belgium, where he accrued four goals and 11 assists across 83 appearances in the Belgian top flight. He has not featured in their league squad since November, however. He was previously on the books for eight years at Shakhtar Donetsk, though he was mostly sent out on loan to other Ukrainian teams and Czech teams during this time.
Playing mostly at left-back, the former Slavia Prague man will fill in for the injured Thomas Delaine. It was during Sobol’s time at Prague that he first entered the French side’s radar. Strasbourg’s head of recruitment, Loïc Désiré, noted that the Alsace club had spotted the Ukrainian in a Sparta-Slavia derby in 2018. Since, the club has kept a close eye on his progress whilst he was in Belgium.
