Florian Thauvin may be headed back to Ligue 1

It seemed like a Mexico-Marseille connection was starting after Florian Thauvin followed former OM striker André-Pierre Gignac’s to Tigres. However, the former World Cup winner has not found life as easy as his compatriot.

The 29-year-old has gone from solid minutes last season to none since the arrival of Argentinian head coach Diego Cocca. The winger’s move to Mexico made him the highest-paid player in Liga MX and with that came very high expectations. The type of expectations that expect more than 8 goals and 5 assists in 38 games with the historic Mexican team.

Per the report in Foot Mercato, it has even been reported that the beloved winger may even have a return to Marseille on the table. To make things worse for the Frenchman, Tigres have a max number of foreign players on their roster and with Thauvin not playing, it would seem he is the “odd man out.”

Big contracts and transfer fees can create impossible expectations for players to live up to. It is also important to understand that each league is not for every player. We have seen players succeed in one league and struggle in others countless times. Sometimes due to factors out of their control or simply because they do not match up well in that particular league.
