Vikas Walkar, the father of Mumbai woman Shraddha Walkar who was killed by her live-in partner Aaftab Poonawala has broken his silence over the murder of his daughter.
Speaking to the media for the first time since the news of his daughter’s brutal murder, Vikas said Shraddha would have been alive if the police had acted when she had filed a complaint against Aaftab.
Shraddha woyld have been alive
Several friends of Shraddha who spoke to the media after the news of her murder surfaced had pointed out that she had constantly suffered abuse from Poonawala and in 2020 had filed a police complaint against him.
“Poonawala has been abusing me and beating me up. Today, he tried to kill me by suffocating me and he scares and blackmails me that he will kill me, cut me up in pieces and throw me anyway. It’s been six months he has been hitting me. But I did not have the guts to go to police because he would threaten to kill me,” she had said in the complaint.
But Shraddha herself later informed the cops that she was withdrawing the complaint and had told friends that ‘such things happen in a relationship’.
Vikas who met Maharashtra deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis at his residence in Mumbai said that the police inaction cost her life.
“An inquiry should also be conducted against the police officials of Vasai and Nalasopara and Tulinj police for delayed the investigation on Shraddha’s complaint. Had they acted immediately, my daughter would have been alive now,” he said.
Aaftab should get capital punishment
Vikas also demanded that Poonawala who killed and cut the body of his daughter into 35 pieces should get the maximum punishment.
“Aaftab Poonawala should be given capital punishment of hanging for killing my daughter…There should be stern action against Poonawala and whosoever was involved in the case,” he said.
Vikas said he was opposed to Shraddha’s relationship with Aaftab since the start as he was from a different community.
“Before leaving home, I had a conversation with Shraddha. I said he isn’t from our community, don’t stay with him. She said I want to stay with him,” he said.
Spoke to Shraddha in mid-2021
The father said she last spoke to Shraddha in mid-2021 when she told him that they were living in Bengaluru.
Vikas also said that he spoke to Poonawala in September this year, after he failed to contact Shraddha for a long time.
“I spoke to Aaftab once on September 26, I asked him where’s my daughter? You were with her for 3 years, if she left you, you should tell me. He said I have no idea where she is. I said it’s your responsibility to tell me if she was with you for three years. He didn’t give any answer,” Vikas said.
Should not happen to any girl
Stating that what happened to his daughter should not happen to any girl, Vikas questioned the “freedom” that people get on turning 18 years old.
“There should be counselling and control over children who turn 18. My daughter told me while leaving home that she was an adult, that’s why I am saying this,” he said.
