Breton Woods Property Purchase Closer To Completion In Brick

BRICK, NJ — The Brick Township Council approved a resolution Tuesday night authorizing an agreement to purchase the Breton Woods property, putting the preservation of the site one step closer to completion.

The resolution approving the agreement comes two months after Brick Township officials and the Ocean County Board of Commissioners agreed to work together to purchase the 31.6-acre site on Laurel Avenue.

The purchase price is $8.55 million, with Brick paying $1.8 million and the county picking up the remainder of the cost.

The council also approved a resolution amending its temporary capital budget to reflect the purchase.

Township Attorney Kevin Starkey said the agreement is with Brick and the county purchasing it from D.R. Horton, which had proposed 59 homes on the site, and Visitation Roman Catholic Church jointly.

D.R. Horton had an agreement with the church to purchase the land, with the purchase apparently contingent on the company receiving approval from Brick Township of its site plan to build the homes. However, over the months of hearings on the proposal, it became apparent that the developer’s proposals for stormwater management for the site were a sticking point for both sides.

Starkey said the agreement has a July 8 closing date, which he anticipates will be when the deal is finally completed.
