FALLBROOK, CA — At least one person was killed and multiple vehicles were damaged in a Sunday afternoon crash on Interstate 15 in the Fallbrook area, the California Highway Patrol reports.

The crash was reported on the southbound side of the freeway around 3:12 p.m., just north of State Route 76. Preliminary CHP reports and images from the scene indicate at least three vehicles were involved in the crash — including a black truck that flipped and landed on its roof. A white Tesla sedan and black sedan were also involved.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office was called to the scene at 3:37 p.m., the CHP reported. It was unclear which vehicle the deceased person had been in.

As of around 6:15 p.m., authorities had completely closed the southbound side of the freeway for an “on scene investigation,” according to the CHP. More than an hour later, it remained closed as the traffic backup continued to grow.

The agency said that due to the traffic in the area, several vehicles drove the wrong way on the shoulder and center divider to get out of the mess, some of which were described as “aggressive.”

Traffic reports indicated a major slowdown on the interstate, and was nearly stopped for about 12 miles from the crash site.

Additional details related to the deadly crash were not immediately available.
