Beverly Hills Seeks Members For Electrical Resilience Ad Hoc Committee

BEVERLY HILLS, CA — Interested in helping Beverly Hills chart a path to be energy self-reliant? The city is seeking residents interested in joining its new Electrical Resilience Ad Hoc Committee.

The committee will consist of two council members and three at-large volunteer members. Applicants must be city residents. Appointments will run for an initial two-year term, according to the city.

“Today, we are dependent on an aging infrastructure that is less reliable than we need. As a result, we are subject to an unacceptable number of failures of the system,” Mayor Julian Gold said in a statement. “The goal of this committee is to investigate technology which will allow us to be more electrically independent in the future and avoid these failures.”

After he was sworn in as mayor earlier this year, Gold singled out electricity independence as something he wanted to focus on during his one-year term.

At his swearing in ceremony, he floated the idea of creating a committee that would explore the benefits, risks and costs of increasing Beverly Hills’ electricity independence. That could include the creation of a microgrid, which allows cities to produce or store some of their own electricity — that’s the kind of thing the committee will explore.

The move was in response to energy service disruptions over the last year, Gold said.
