This CT Diner Honored By Food Network Magazine

STAMFORD, CT — Food Network Magazine recently revealed its “50 Over-the-Top Treats” across the United States, and representing Connecticut is the Nutella S’mores French Toast Tower from Elm Street Diner in Stamford.

The list, which highlights the most “outrageous” and “must-try” sweet treat in each state, is featured in the magazine’s July/August 2023 edition.

Elm Street Diner is located at 463 Elm St., in Stamford. The Nutella S’mores French Toast Tower features stacks of thick French toast, layered with plenty of toasted marshmallows, crumbled graham crackers and a generous drizzle of Nutella.

“You can order this gravity-defying wonder any time of day at Elm Street Diner in Stamford. The only way to tackle it is from the top down,” wrote Food Network Magazine’s Mariah Schlossmann.

John Moshos, owner of Elm Street Diner, described the dish as “a combo of a decadent brunch/dessert.”

“If someone already had a savory brunch or breakfast meal, that could be a great compliment as a dessert later on,” Moshos said. “A lot of the time what we see is multiple people at a table during a brunch will order that and they’ll share it and dig into it.”

Moshos said he was “extremely excited” when he found out about the honor.

“It’s a pretty big accomplishment, especially considering the magnitude of Food Network and it’s a national and global brand,” he told Patch.

Elm Street Diner first opened in Stamford in 1987. The eatery has gained notable attention in recent years through viral social media postings that highlight the menu and their outrageous creations. The diner was featured in a 2020 episode of the Food Network show “Food Paradise. The eatery has 138,000 followers on Instagram.

“We try to elevate the traditional American diner experience. We put our unique and innovative twist on things. This kind of shows what we do with a traditional dish like a French toast,” Moshos added.

Moshos called it “a never-ending process” to come up with new offerings, and he likened his mind to a “mad scientist.”

“I’ll think about one flavor profile that I think is very popular and works well for us, and I’ll take some notes on my phone,” Moshos said, adding that he’ll come back to the idea a week or so later to try and bring a new dish to life. “A lot of the time it’s just trial and error in my head. In a way, it’s kind of like a science experiment to me. We kind of bring science, art and food together.”

Elm Street Diner will soon expand into Norwalk at 515 West Ave. Moshos said construction will begin soon, and he expects to open in mid-to-late fall.

“The menu is going to be the same,” Moshos told Patch in March. “We’re going to do a lot of the very unique, crazy, over-the-top stuff we’ve been featured on social media and the Food Network for. The great comfort food, the everyday food.”
