In the controversial and highly offensive photo, two young people — presumably TCHS students — can be seen holding a white poster with the message: “If I was black I’d be picking cotton but I’m white so I’m picking U 4 Prom.”

Tuscaloosa Patch has opted against posting the photo due to the high likelihood that both individuals in the picture are under the age of 18.

In a joint message to parents from TCHS Principal Darrell Williams and TCSS Superintendent Keri Johnson, the administrators addressed the post after mentioning the immediate backlash once the picture began to gain traction and more attention.

“I want you to know there is absolutely no room for racially motivated language at Tuscaloosa County High School and in the Tuscaloosa County School System,” the statement reads. “It will not be tolerated. Our Student Code of Conduct sets the expectation that students will show respect for others. The Beliefs of the Tuscaloosa County School System state that diversity is respected and included. While I cannot discuss disciplinary action involving a specific student, be assured that this behavior carries serious consequences”

The statement goes on to say that TCSS leadership places a high premium on students feeling
safe, valued, and included.

“We work to make this a reality every day at TCHS, and we’re always striving to do better,” the statement says “What is reflected in the photo circulating on social media does not reflect the beliefs and values of TCHS.”
