WILLOW GROVE, PA — Macy’s announced this week that some 150 of its stores around the nation would be shut down over the next year, but they did not announce exactly which stores.

Some of the stores had separately made announcements, or information had been leaked, indicating that they would be closing.

Montgomery County is home to three Macy’s locations, including one at Willow Grove Park. The store has not made any specific announcement but has not given any indication that it is expecting to close.

The King of Prussia Mall, home to one of most well known Macy’s in the region, has also not made any specific announcement. The store remains a cornerstone of one of the nation’s largest shopping centers.

Patch has reached out to Simon, the owner of King of Prussia Mall, for further comment. The fate of Montgomery Mall’s Macy’s is similarly unknown.

The department store chain plans to close 50 of the targeted stores by the end of 2024, and another 100 over the next few years. By 2026, Macy’s will have 350 stores, the company said.

Macy’s faces a proxy fight from Arkhouse Management which nominated a slate of nine directors for election to Macy’s board last week. Last month, Macy’s rejected a $5.8 billion takeover offer from the hedge fund and Brigade Capital Management, an investment manager.

As society increasingly moves away from in-person shopping, and Americans increasingly spend less and less as awareness of the social and environmental impacts of consumerism spreads, major department stores and malls have faced a reckoning.

Even with the shift in focus, Macy’s is cutting jobs. The department store said in January it would trim about 2,350 employees, or about 3.5 percent of its workforce, and would close five stores.
