BELLEVILLE, NJ — A new recreational space featuring an “all-inclusive playground,” basketball/pickleball courts and a dog park are coming to Belleville, the town’s mayor says.
Earlier this week, Michael Melham posted an update about a project that’s shaping up near Belleville School #9.

“Last week we broke ground on a brand-new municipal public space next to #9 School in the Valley. Phase 1 will consist of Belleville’s first all-inclusive playground, two half-court basketball courts, two more pickleball courts and another dog park. The turf futsal field remains and the existing parking lot will be expanded and enhanced.”
The existing field will eventually be converted to a small baseball/softball field and a U10 soccer field in Phase II, Melham said.
The mayor said the construction is being done without the use of local taxpayer funds.

“The funds for this project were made possible through developer community contributions,” Melham said. “Monies received in the form of required community givebacks from the two industrial projects, which cleaned up environmentally contaminated land on 24 acres and 14 acres on the Nutley border, made this project possible.”
