Waves Damaged Ocean Grove's Cross-Shaped Pier

OCEAN GROVE, NJ — The cross-shaped pier in Ocean Grove — that was only open for a few months before being closed for safety reasons — has now been damaged by strong waves.

The Methodist Camp Meeting Association, which owns the pier and much of the land in Ocean Grove, released the news this March in an update on the pier.

They said they hired professional divers to look at the pier on Feb. 15, and they discovered the pier “suffered damage when unusually strong ocean wave action caused three of the 88 newly installed pier pilings to break.”

“No further damage to the pier has been observed since that time,” said the Camp Meeting Association. “Nevertheless, in an abundance of caution, the pier remains closed until the ongoing investigation as to the cause of that damage has been completed.”

Camp Meeting Association president Michael Badger previously said the pier was designed, in part, in a “T” shape to withstand strong storms.
