Club Corner is back one final time in 2022 to discuss the upcoming weekend in clubland.Only two premier club rugby matches remain in 2022, as Grand Finals are set to play out this weekend for the Hospital Challenge Cup in Brisbane, and the Coopers Premier Grade in Adelaide.
It compliments a stellar weekend of grand final footy last week, starting off in the nation’s capital. After firing warning shots all season, Queanbeyan lifted the John I Dent Cup for the first time since 2010, stunning the Canberra Royals 16-29. The win ends an eleven year stranglehold on the cup between the Royals and Vikings, with even the Wallabies getting in on the festivities!
Down in the Apple Isle, the season also came to an end in thrilling fashion as Launceston Tigers overcame the Taroona Penguins 17-16 to go back-to-back in the Tasmanian Premier Grade. The favourites had to come from behind off the back of a solid performance from the kicking tee from Taroona’s Noah Kazarine, with the result likely to live long in the memory for the Launceston faithful.
Finally, the last grand final last week saw Wests Scarborough overcome minor premiers UWA to win the Fortescue Premier Grade 35-43, marking the first time since 2017 that the Boars have held the cup aloft. The result caps off a strong year for rugby in the West, with many teams putting their hand for contention, boding well for seasons to come! Now, for one last time, let’s dive into the upcoming fixtures for this weekend:Watch every minute of club rugby on Stan Sport. QUEENSLAND PREMIER GRADE – GRAND FINAL – WESTS BULLDOGS VS UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLANDFollowing a thrilling performance last weekend, UQ will travel to Suncorp Stadium this weekend to face Wests in a grand final that is set to live long in the memory for many fans. The Red Heavies overcame a star-studded Brothers lineup, and did so in convincing fashion, winning 36-22.The stage is set even more by the fact both sides played out a 37-37 thriller earlier in finals, which saw Wests go through to the Grand Final on regular season placings. The Bulldogs will likely be wary as a result, though will also be well rested from a critical bye before the final.UQ will be going into their seventh grand final in a row, having prevailed in three of the last six. While they have momentum on their side, the clashes between them and Wests have been dogged (pardon the pun) to say the least, with one win, one loss and one draw.Bragging rights, winning differential and the Hospital Challenge Cup will be on the line at Suncorp Stadium this Saturday. COOPERS PREMIER GRADE – GRAND FINAL – BRIGHTON VS BURNSIDEBailey Reserve will host the grand final of the Coopers Premier Grade this weekend, as Burnside square off against current premiers Brighton. The visitors will fancy their chances to spring an upside, riding off the back of their 35-25 win last week against a strong Elzabeth side.Brighton have been the benchmark all year however, being in commanding form over the end of the regular season and into finals. They will also likely be wary of the visitors, having to work hard to overcome them in the first week of finals, while also going down to them at home the previous fixture before that in round 12.The rugby faithful in Adelaide will look forward to a thrilling contest on Saturday, bringing an end to a positive rugby seasonEnjoy your club rugby this weekend, and thanks for your support of club rugby in 2022!Click Here: baby knitted accessories
