Exclusive | Lorient President Loïc Féry on Mattéo Guendouzi: “I was quite confident he’d be up for the challenge.”

Speaking as part of an exclusive interview with Get French Football News, FC Lorient President Loïc Féry discussed Mattéo Guendouzi’s meteoric rise.

“We knew that Mattéo has an amazing personality where we are talking about the ability to always want more and to never be satisfied with the success that you have, I think he is clearly one of those players who has had the ability to each time he has been confronted to going up in teams (at youth level), he immediately been able to have an impact. When he was 16 he was playing in the 17s (string), 17 he was playing in the 18s (string)…”

“So basically we felt that at some point, obviously he had some issues with the coach which did prevent us from really seeing his full potential all season, it was with the coach and some of his team-mates, but I wish it could have been otherwise and when Arsenal came for him, I was quite confident that he would be up for the challenge. He came in during a post-World Cup season, he had the opportunity to do all the pre-season and the pre-season tour with Arsenal to show he could have impact. It comes down to a virtuous cycle of confidence, he was able to gain that confidence and his results in Arsenal have meant that he was called up to the France U21s and now the France A team. I know he didn’t play, but he was called by Didier Deschamps in the last international break.”
