NEWARK, NJ — Several community groups plan to hold a rally to mourn for Sonya Massey in Newark, New Jersey this weekend.

A sheriff’s deputy fatally shot Massey, 36, in her Illinois home on July 6 after she called 911 for help, fearing that a prowler was nearby. The officer has been charged with murder and has pleaded not guilty; bodycam video footage of the shooting has been released, the Associated Press reported.

Massey, a mother of a 17-year-old and 15-year-old, is being mourned nationally, including in Newark, where a massive protest took place in 2020 after the murder of George Floyd. Many advocates are pointing to similarities between other police shootings involving a Black victim and a white officer.

A local demonstration will take place in Massey’s name in Newark on Sunday, July 28. Participants will assemble at 2 p.m. at the Lincoln Monument, 12 Springfield Avenue. The march will continue to Broad and Market streets for the rally.

Lawrence Hamm, chair of the People’s Organization for Progress – one of the groups spearheading the protest – said the incident is “like Derek Chauvin killing George Floyd all over again.”

Zayid Muhammad, an organizer with Newark Communities for Accountable Policing, agreed with Hamm, adding that Newark has also seen fatal police shootings in the recent past. See Related: No Criminal Charges For Newark Cop Who Shot Unarmed Man, Jury Rules

“This is why strong civilian oversight of police matters,” Muhammad said. “This is why public transparency of police records matters.”

“We must continue to send the message to the United States and to the entire western world that senseless community violence, domestic violence, environmental violence, educational violence, and police violence are not acceptable in the African world community,” said Bashir Muhammad Ptah Akinyele of the Association for the Study of Classical African Civilization.

Other groups that plan to participate in Sunday’s rally include All Politics Are Local and the Newark Anti-Violence Coalition. See Related: ‘The Significance Of The Newark Anti-Violence Coalition’ (Newark Op-Ed)

Organizers said the local action in Newark is a part of a national day of mourning, which will also involve rallies in other cities such as New York City, Louisville, Minneapolis, Atlanta and Norfolk.
