Lyon captain Nabil Fékir has rejected a preliminary contract extension proposal from the Ligue 1 side, with his current deal expiring in 2020, according to L’Équipe.
Lyon President Aulas has a very good relationship with Fékir’s soon to be ex-agent Jean-Pierre Bernès, with whom the player no longer speaks directly too after the summer debacle with his failed move to Liverpool.
The Bernès – Fékir mandate expires on the 17th April, at which point the French international attacking midfielder is expected to seek new representation. Regardless of this fact, contract extension negotiations began for Fékir via Bernès in January – the pair communicate solely via email. After Fékir rejected Lyon’s opening extension offer, he made a counter-proposal via his agent Bernès, which Lyon viewed to be financially not approvable.
Bernès will no longer take part in these discussions, but does not intend to remain passive. The agent’s lawyer, Carlo Brusa, intends to file for a right of cover, which essentially means an obligation for the player to stick with the agent who begun contract extension negotiations, whether or not Fékir signs a new deal, which could bother the Fékir clan further. Especially because the Frenchman is well aware that his contract situation will make him more attractive on the transfer market this summer.
Bernès had the following to say on the matter:
“It is not about staying here. And we will know maybe the real circumstances that prevented Fékir’s move to Liverpool. The knee was a part of it, but not only that. He had passed a medical, done photos with the Reds shirt…”
Lyon President Aulas could find himself in the midst of a tricky situation: he doesn’t want to let Fékir go, nor does he want to end up in an Adrien Rabiot situation where he loses the attacking midfielder for free in the summer of 2020. This is only the beginning of a saga that this time could include legal twists and turns.
