BERKELEY, NJ — Driving on Route 9 in Bayville can be a pain. But some alleviation is coming with the installation of a new traffic light at Hickory Lane and Route 9, township officials confirmed.
The town has been trying to get a light installed there for the past few years, as turning left onto Route 9 from Hickory can be a long – and risky – process. And thankfully, unlike other newer traffic lights in town, this one didn’t take several fatalities to be installed.
“Finally, eureka, they’re going to put the traffic light in,” said Mayor John Bacchione at a recent Township Council meeting, noting that it had been a lengthy process. He thanked his secretary, Stacy Georgaklis, who he said “badgered” the state Department of Transportation daily asking for updates on the light.

Bacchione said it is a “well-positioned traffic light” and added that with 156 homes recently going up on Hickory, it’s needed now more than ever.
Township Council voted to approve an agreement between Berkeley and the state for the installation of the light.

Sen. Carmen Amato, who started the process into installing the light when he was still mayor of Berkeley, told Patch they’re looking to get a construction schedule. As of now, no timeline has been confirmed.
