Can Any French Club Compete with PSG?

When people talk about French football these days the first club they mention is Paris Saint-Germain. This is largely down to the fact that they certainly seem to have a lot of financial power after splashing out around £200m on Neymar from Barcelona. This makes them a global force in football and not just in Ligue 1, but for all the financial muscle that they have and the star studded squad that they possess; can any other French club compete with them in the league?

At the time of writing PSG find themselves with a healthy lead over second placed Monaco. They’ve only dropped 7 points so far after 19 games played with draws at Montpellier and Marseille followed by a shock defeat against Racing Strasbourg. They’ve won 16 games from the 19 and currently boast not only the best offensive record in the division (58) but the best defensive record too (15). This means their goal difference is a lot healthier than that of those in the chasing pack.

As things stand right now you would probably suggest that PSG are going to end the season as Ligue 1 champions, taking the title back from Monaco, who beat them to top spot last season. They certainly have the players in the squad to help them keep up this remarkable form too. They have a good spine to their side which includes a great goalkeeper in Alphonse Areola, Marquinhos and Thiago Silva at the back, Marco Verratti and Adrien Rabiot in midfield; and then at the top of the pitch they have an embarrassment of riches which includes Neymar, Edinson Cavani, Kylian Mbappe and Angle Di Maria.

The players available to manager Unai Emery mean that not only are PSG the dominant force in Ligue 1, but they’re also contenders in Europe too. They’re currently still involved in the Champions League this season and they’ll certainly fancy their chances against out of sorts Real Madrid in the last 16. If any French club is to compete with PSG this season, their only hope is that they may take their foot off of the gas domestically; if they have the potential to go on and lift the Champions League trophy in May. Monaco, who won the Ligue 1 title last season, currently find themselves in second place in the league. They did however manage to put together an impressive 12 game winning streak last season on their way to claiming the title, and the club would have to do something similar this time around just to have any hope of toppling PSG’s current dominance. The odds are really stacked against any side who feel they still have a chance of being named Ligue 1 champions this season but it won’t stop the likes of Monaco, Lyon and Marseille pushing PSG all the way.

Right now Paris Saint-Germain are not only unrivalled in terms of financial power but they’re unrivalled in terms of their squad and form in the division too. This is likely to go on for a good few years yet as PSG and their owners show no sign of stopping as they press ahead with plans to become one of the real players in world football. We could see Paris Saint-Germain rule Ligue 1 for years to come at this rate.
