HEMPSTEAD, NY — Strong winds are expected to smack Long Island throughout Wednesday.

In the Town of Hempstead, Supervisor Don Clavin said that despite rain overnight, the worst is on the way.

“This afternoon is shaping up to be a real problem,” Clavin told Patch.

Up to two inches of rain could fall, with wind gusts topping 60 miles per hour.

“It’s a bad combination for safety [and[ for people traveling,” he said.

Soaking rain and whipping wind are also the ingredients for power outages with tree limbs knocking lines down.

“This time of the year is kind of tricky,” Clavin said. “You have a lot of leaves that hit the ground and when they build up on the storm drains, the streets will flood.

The town sent crews out over the weekend and again Wednesday morning during a lull in the storm to clear the drains.

Another reason why the calendar isn’t favorable for this weather.

“A lot of people have seasonal decorations outside,” he said.

He is suggesting homeowners take them down, especially the large inflatable display pieces.

“If you don’t, tomorrow morning your decorations might be your neighbors now,” Clavin said.
