FAIRFAX CITY, VA — Erin Schaible announced on Thursday that she was retiring as the chief of police for the City of Fairfax Police Department.
Schaible was hired as Fairfax City’s first female chief in January 2019, succeeding Carl Pardiny, who retired from the department the previous December after 30 years of service.
Schaible’s announcement came just two days after the outgoing Fairfax City Council voted 5-2 to terminate without cause the contract of City Manager Laszlo Palko, which the council was allowed to do under the terms of Palko’s employment agreement.

“The Chief is not resigning. This is a planned retirement. The retirement announcement and Mr. Palko’s termination is coincidental,” a spokesman with city police told Patch on Thursday. “As of right now, the department does not have an official statement, but we will be releasing something soon.”
Before becoming the city’s police chief, Schaible was a deputy chief at the Fairfax County Police Department, where she was a senior advisor to the chief of police. In total, she spent just over 28 years in the county police department.
