NORTHBROOK, IL — At Glenbrook North, the physical education department prioritizes the health of students through physical literacy. The four main tenets of this philosophy are: motivation and confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding, and engagement in physical activities for life.
With these goals, the educators will be hosting the inaugural health fair at the school from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 20. At the fair, students will have an opportunity to connect with health and wellness companies, which organizers say offer a “wealth” of services designed to promote physical and mental well-being.
“This is the first year, so we are excited and anxious to see how it turns out,” Justin Georgacakis, GBN physical education teacher and varsity lacrosse coach, tells Patch.

According to Georgacakis, the Northbrook Chamber of Commerce has helped with finding participants, which will include Studio Spin, Restore, CATCH, Cutting Edge, and many more. He adds that several GBN teachers will be leading activities, ranging from CrossFit to cooking demonstrations.

“This diverse group of businesses specializes in different aspects of wellness, creating a well-rounded event for our students,” Georgacakis said.

Moving forward, the organizers are hoping to continue growing the event, and to include even more companies and groups. Georgacakis said the school is committed to strengthening the local community and fostering meaningful connections for everyone.
“It is absolutely essential for students to learn about ways to improve their health,” Georgacakis said. “Understanding how to take care of their bodies through regular exercise, proper nutrition, and mental wellness practices equips them with the tools they need to lead a healthy, balanced life. The habits they form during early education will set the foundation for their future well-being.”
