Valentwe'en Gothic Art Show In St. Pete Celebrates Edgar Allan Poe

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — About 30 artists are showing their work celebrating Edgar Allan Poe at Saturday evening’s opening of this year’s Valentwe’en: Tell-Tale Heartevent Saturday, 5 to 9 p.m., at Art Lofts in downtown St. Petersburg.

Artist and organizer Brandy Stark has been hosting Valentwe’en for years trying to “turn February into the new October,” she told Patch. “It’s like a gothic Valentine’s Day, a mashup between Valentine’s Day and Halloween.”

Each year features a different theme, including “Little Shop of Horrors” and zombies in the past.
Poe’s work lends itself well to the event, Stark said. “He does have an appeal. There’s something about that romantic maudlin idea that comes from Poe and his work.”

While the art will be on display through Feb. 29, Saturday’s opening night celebration will also feature readings by a Poe lookalike, belly dancers, a performance by artist Francine Michel, the Spirits of St. Petersburg and a spiritual reader.

It’s a busy month for Stark, who is also hosting a separate gothic-themed art show on Feb. 17 at Smokin’ 19 and ghost tours in Roser Park on Feb. 24, as well as presenting at the Feb. 27 Nerd Nite event.
