Manufacture and sales of eco-friendly diyas, lanterns and firecrackers are also being encouraged. So here is a look at how women artisans who are turning the festival into an opportunity to not only showcase their talent but also promoting PM’s ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative.

Women of a self-help group in J&K’s Udhampur are making low-cost and eco-friendly diyas out of cow dung for Diwali.
In an interview with ANI, the women said, “Agriculture dept official gave idea to do something different with cow dung. With rise in demand of the diyas, we employed more women who’ve now become ‘atmanirbhar’.”
“I request all to use handmade products to help poor earn their living and also save themselves from pollution,” one of the women said.

The idea of ‘Vocal for Local’ derives from the 1905 Swadeshi movement in India. It encouraged the emergence of Indian nationalism as an economic approach. To develop a domestic major industry, the concept is to consciously adopt a socialist growth pattern from 1945 to the 1960s.
Kickstarted by PM Modi on his Mann Ki Baat in October 2021, the initiative urges people to buy local products in the festive season.
