Former Indian captain Kapil Dev had a word of warning for Shubman Gill ahead of the Indian Premier League final where Gujarat Titans take on Chennai Super Kings on Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
Gill’s performances in the IPL this season have gone a long way towards cementing his place as a three-format player and the next great Indian batsmen – along the lines of Gavaskar, Tendulkar and Kohli.

“He needs to watch out for the next three years before he takes his place in the hall of modern greats. When Sunil (Gavaskar) finished playing, Sachin (Tendulkar) carried on the good work. When Sachin departed, we had Virat (Kohli) donning the hat. Now, with Kohli still around, Indian cricket is fortunate to have Gill preparing to dominate world cricket with his astonishing prowess,” Kapil said, according to Sportstar.
The 1983 World Cup winning captain also observed that Gill had the ability to take on any bowling attack to the cleaners and players of his ilk had to be protected and guided to the top.
Kapil then added, “The problems may not necessarily come from the field of play. He will need to focus on his game as his popularity rises. Expectations of him are bound to grow. He may need sound counselling in today’s world of exposure. It was different when Gavaskar and Tendulkar were ruling the world. Today, a youngster is constantly under scrutiny. Every move is put on social media. I want Gill to stay grounded and blessed. He is destined to go far, but for the next three years he has to stay focused and consistent.”
Gill’s batting prowess has taken Gujarat into the IPL finals. He has stitched together three tons in this IPL campaign and has smashed 851 runs in 16 matches to be a leading contender to win the orange cap this season.
