LFP statement explains decision to restart Nice v Marseille after pitch invasion

Following the chaos that ensued at the Allianz Riviera last night as Marseille players were attacked by pitch invading Nice fans leading to a mass brawl between both sets of players and coaches, the LFP has explained it’s controversial decision to attempt to restart the match, despite Marseille players refusing to return to the pitch and the offending ultras remaining in the stands.

“The decision to resume the match was taken by the Prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes in order to guarantee public order and the safety of the 32,000 spectators present at the stadium. The LFP aligned itself with this position. The Disciplinary Commission of the LFP is now in charge of the case and has summoned the two clubs on Wednesday, August 25th. The LFP will also be mindful of judicial rulings brought against the troublemakers at the root of these incidents. These extremely serious events occur after in-depth work has been carried out over several seasons with the National Supporters Authority, in which the LFP actively participates, such as allowing the return of standing stands in certain stadiums.”
